Why are there such different graduation rates?

Why are graduation rates so low & diverse?

General

An article on cappex shows that graduations rates seem to fluctuate a lot depending how long you go to school and what kind of school you are attending. For example public college have a general graduation rate of 33% for a four year and 57.6% for 6 years but at a private institution four year has 52.8% and six year has 65.4%.Really seems odd that the percentages can change so much between being private to public or just from four to six years. I wonder what could cause this?

Government

Well it all seems odd because it is odd. The government have not been including all different kinds of students until recently. Students which have transferred schools and students who are under pell grants have not been included with that percentage and the list goes on as well. But hey what about the other percentage you may be asking, since it still isn't a pure 100% graduation rate.

Finance

There are more things that affect graduation rate as you can imagine versus it all just being a ploy from the government to hide information from us for the good or the better or on accident or not. Either way what else could cause graduation rates to fall? Well in my opinion it is definitely the financial aspect of it. There is research showing that people who had the money to pay for college out of pocket versus those who had financial aid and had to take out loans had a higher graduation rate by about 4.2%. That may seem like a low margin but that is out of thousands of students, it is not as small as you once thought. Most people tend to have jobs while they're going to school as well, either as work-study or an out of school job. A job combined with school and all your living expenses combined can be incredibly stressful, especially for someone who just entered 'adulthood'. It is hard to manage all these things when they hit you in the face and some people just can't handle it anymore and unfortunately drop out.

Family

So there's money, there's the government and then there's your family. Maybe you're spending way too much time on school then you are with them and it's all just getting in your mind that you need to give them more attention and you drop out of college so you can take more care of them then just leaving them at home all day. But that isn't the case most of the time, most of the time you're between 18 to 21ish years old in college and so you don't have a family most of the time. What's the issue then? Well when you are at home living with your parents or your guardian life can happen and cause people to move and that can be pretty problematic when that's combined with college and now you have to deal with moving expenses and all that other dumb stuff. That and other family issues combined can cause someone to drop out from all the stress put unto them.

Comments

  1. I agree that finances are huge reason why people tend to drop out college. The stress of working while in school is something some people could handle. I do think that you could be more clear about family affects school works, for example they have to drop out to help with a disabled family member.

    1. Good point, Pearl. Family issues can make or break a student.
